Week 22:What's happening

A fairly brief note this week as I'm away visiting family - the M6 on a sweltering bank holiday Monday in a car with no air con and a 5 year old wasn't fun but it is very lovely to be seeing people we haven't seen for so very long. Back for the shop on Friday though, never fear ;)

Chris has been holding the fort - after his sailing jaunt last weekend so don't feel too sorry for him - and has done a separate post about what's been happening in the field so you can check that out here.

Eat Your Greens veg boxes:

We're a bit disappointed in some of the veg we've bought in this week, possibly the scorching temperatures have had an impact. Please bear with us, the veg WILL get better but we're not sure we've had to throw away so much veg as we have in the past few weeks. We're not sure if it's a result of Brexit and/or Covid and/or weather and/or something completely different but we're really holding out for things to improve. This is why we need you to stick with us through the summer as the summer is when we try to recoup what we lose at this time of year when things are just hard going.

The Vale Grocer shop: (open Friday mornings 9.30-1.30)

Potatoes, new potatoes, onions, carrots, asparagus, aubergine, courgette, cucumber, Helda beans, salad leaves, mushrooms, red peppers, garlic, cherry tomatoes, maybe some of our broad beans

Fruit: apples, bananas, oranges, apricots, strawberries

+ eggs & apple juice

Recipe inspiration:

Another good pantry staple when veg is not at it's best - tomato and caper pasta (this recipe uses passata but it's great with cherry tomatoes too).

Also learnt today that when you're doing a tomato salad, prep the tomatoes beforehand by drizzling white wine vinegar and some salt - really brings out the flavour and juicyness.

have a good week
