Week 14: What's happening

We're hoping to get out for a bit of a (well wrapped up) walk today so hope the rain /snow / arctic wind stays away. Hope everyone had a lovely Easter weekend in that amazing sunshine...before the icy temps kicked in! Was a bit of a shock to the system. My Google photos reminded me that we had snow at this time in 2019 and 2018 so the fact it seems way too late to be this cold I think is based purely on how fab the weather was this time last year - memory bias is a facinating thing. Peak end bias means we remember the end of an experience more than the rest of it, and I think I'm very much remembering the end of last winter/start of spring which was so unusually warm.

Chris and Rosie have been doing some great work at Rhewl Fach, it's all looking great but the green house is getting full! We're hardening off some plants which are getting quite big now but need to wait for the warmer weather to plant them out. Chris not had a chance to write about what he's been up to but there's a video here which talks about how we're having to eke out the greens we do have as we enter the UK hungry gap. Now is definitely the time to empty your freezer and get it ready for the summer months - everything fresh is just in shorter supply and we have to use it a bit more carefully

Eat Your Greens veg boxes:

Not much to report. Baking potatoes in some of the boxes this week, just for a change. More available in the shop this week. Regular boxes have kale, radishes and/or salad from Prion, small boxes have chard. The apples in the regular boxes are still from the UK - Spartans. In the small boxes the fruit is a 'clementine ortanique'! - hard to peel (sorry) but tasty.

The Vale Grocer shop: open Friday 9.30-1.30

Plenty of: potatoes (Red Cara and baking potatoes), onions, carrots, mushrooms, leeks, green palermo peppers, ginger, garlic, lemons, tomatoes, cauliflowers, savoy cabbages, avocadoes (smaller than the last ones!), purple sprouting broccoli, tomatoes

Limited: sweet potato, butternut squash, aubergine, courgette, various fresh greens from Prion - salad, spinach, radishes

Fruit: clementine ortanique, UK apples, lemons

Recipes:

This sweet potato curry is fab. Really tasty.

And some veg just is meant to go together - leeks and mushrooms can work in som many things but here's an easy yummy pasta recipe. You can add bacon too!

have a good week
